PRIMI Protocol

The technical framework structure of the upstream is built on the basis of the PRIMI protocol. PRIMI verifies whether the cattle come from areas free of deforestation (cut-off date of December 2020), invasion of Indigenous Lands, Full Protection Conservation Units, Sustainable Use Conservation Units, environmental embargoes, and slave labor.

PRIMI analyses are based on public data referring to all rural properties involved in all stages of the life of each animal, from calf to fattening and subsequent slaughter. The protocol is applied throughout the national territory in establishments that carry out activities of breeding, rearing and fattening of animals and that seek to analyze the main socio-environmental criteria related to rural properties, for demonstration to animal slaughtering establishments, retailers, tanneries, cattle auctions, live cattle exporting companies, by-product purchasing companies and the consumer market as a whole,  its condition of exemption from social and environmental violations, through the attribution of an individual classification to each animal included in the Program.

Other protocols may become part of the Initiative, provided that the technical part is in line with international traceability and transparency requirements and that they are aligned with the objectives of the COTI Initiative.
